XIII. tool: descending

mit dem 13. türchen kommt der bislang längste song des diesjährigen adventlichen musikalender. passenderweise dauert descending von tool 13 minuten ungrad. und schon weitgehend wissend wies weitergeht: es wird nicht der längste track sein, 2 noch längere sind vorgesehen. beim wiederhören des songs dämmerte es mir, dass das zugehörige album fear inoculum bereits 2019 erschienen ist. seither ging viel wasser den rhein runter. viel erlebnis, erfahrung und entwicklung. dafür tut sich in mir grad ne immense dankbarkeit auf. für alle begegnungen, für die abschiede von bisherigen gefährt*innen. für alle, die dazu gekommen sind. für all das, was tiefer, näher, wahrer geworden ist. für all das, was noch offen ist als aufgabe & sich von mir wünscht, nicht aufgegeben zu werden. das lernen miteinaner ist hilfreich und heilsam. und die musik bleibt. die neueste, unterdessen 6 jährige scheibe von tool ist mit all ihrer komplexität sehr ohrenfreundlich produziert. die songs sind lange und beinhalten jeweils mehrere abschnitte. die zahl 7 taucht sowohl konzeptutell wie auch musikalisch immer wieder auf im verlaufe des albums. die anspruchsvoll-poetischen texte ermutigen die zuhörenden und anregen, in sich selbst nach identität, verständis und reflexion zu suchen. die vertrackten arrangements aus polyrhythmen lassen immer wieder platz zum atmen. auch er ist ein wiederkehrendes thema auf fear inoculum, denn für maynard james keenan ist eine der kernideen im album, dass wir unsere gegenwärtige situation annehmen, unsere herkunft anerkennen und auch die dinge, die uns zu dem gemacht haben, das wir wir im hier und jetzt sind. descending beginnt mit wellen- und wassergeräuschen vom waliser musiker, sounddesigner und komponisten lustmord. der song ist ein aufruf zum handeln, die menschheit vor dem selbstverursachten untergang zu retten. der erzähler beschreibt uns als gefangene eines selbstverursachten wahns und drückt die notwendigkeit aus, dass wir uns erheben und handeln müssen, ‘damit wir nicht aufhören zu existieren’. und genau darum ist mir wichtig, den song zu zeigen. in zeiten wie diesen, wo vieles aus den fugen ist, braucht es jedes einzelne erwachen. das bringt uns schritt für schritt näher an die neue welt, von der wir in unseren herzen wissen, dass sie möglich ist. für alles lebendige auf auf unserem heimatplaenten, der uns überhaupt erst möglich macht, insbesondre auch für alle nicht-menschlichen lebewesen… danke, maynard, danny carey, justin chancellor und adam jones, dass ihr soundtrack dazu seid. ❤️‍🔥 von tool gibts es kaum professionell gefilmte live aufnahmen. drum hier zu einer drum cam von pneuma, ebenfalls vom album fear inoculum – dies war der erste song des albums, mit dem ich ‘klick’ gemacht habt. und hier zu den 3 songs, die sie diesen juli am back to the beginning gespielt haben.

the 13th door reveals the longest song in this year’s musical advent calendar so far. appropriately, descending by tool lasts just a little over 13 minutes. as i already know how it continues, i want to let you know taht it won’t be the longest track, as two even longer ones are scheculed. listening to the song again, it dawned on me that the accompanying album fear inoculum was released back in 2019. a lot has happened since then. a lot of experiences, lessons learned and development. i feel immense gratitude for all of this. for all the encounters, for the farewells to previous companions. for all those who have joined us. for everything that has become deeper, closer, truer. for everything that is still open as threads that want to be tied together. learning together is helpful and healing. and the music remains. tool’s latest album, now six years old, is very easy on the ears because of it’s production despite all its musical complexity. the songs are long and each contain several sections. the number 7 appears repeatedly throughout the album, both conceptually and musically. the sophisticated, poetic lyrics encourage listeners and inspire them to search within themselves for identity, understanding and reflection. the intricate arrangements of polyrhythms repeatedly leave room to breathe. this is also a recurring theme on fear inoculum, because for maynard james keenan, one of the core ideas in the album is that we should accept our current situation, acknowledge our origins and also the things that have made us who we are in the here and now. descending begins with wave and water sounds from welsh musician, sound designer and composer lustmord. the song is a call to action to save humanity from self-inflicted destruction. the narrator describes us as prisoners of a self-inflicted delusion and expresses the necessity that we must rise up and act ‘lest we cease to be’. and that is precisely why it is important to me to share this song. in times like these, when so much is out of joint, every single awakening is needed. this brings us step by step closer to the new world that we know in our hearts is possible. for all living things on our home planet, which makes us possible in the first place, especially for all non-human beings... thank you, maynard, danny carey, Justin chancellor and adam jones, for being the soundtrack to this. ❤️‍🔥 there are hardly any professionally filmed live recordings of tool.
