XI. endochine: can’t find a way

der song, der sich heute zeigen möchte ist ein geschwistertes vom gestrigen. can’t find a way von endochine ist verwandt mit lover, you should’ve come over von jeff buckley – vielleicht auch eine replik, reaktion oder antwort darauf: textlich, kompositorisch, gesanglich, von der instrumentierung und von auch von den körperempfindungen, emotionen, gefühlen und assoziationen her, die der song auszulösen vermag. das album day two, auf dem can’t find a way zu finden ist, ist vergriffen. und auch endochine gibt es nicht mehr als band. spuren im internet jedoch schon, um beispiel eine 20 jahre altes live video zum song. auf die band und insbesondere deren sänger casey mcpherson wurde ich vor etwa 15 jahren aufmerksam, weil mein lieblings-schlagwerker mike portnoy sie auf eine seiner berühmten listen notiert hat: auf die der lieblingsallben des jahrzehnts 2001-2010. berührt, bewegt & beindruckt war ich beim ersthören dieser cd, die gar nicht so einfach zu besorgen war. über viele jahre hab ich bis dahin lebende künstler*innen vermisst, die mich mit ihrer emotionalen intensität an denselben stellen angsprechen wie jeff buckley. das für heute ausgewählte lied ging ins also voll herz, vor allem wegen caseys gesang. und es war bislang noch nie in einem meiner öffentlichen musikzeige-formaten! höchste eisenbahn… wenn ich schon von casey schreibe, hab ich noch 2 wichtigkeiten. erstens: 2012 erschien das erste von (bislang) drei flying colours alben mit casey an stimme & gitarre, mike am schlagzeug, neal morse an stimme & keyobards, steve morse an der gitarre und dave larue am bass. grandioser progressive pop-rock. vielleicht siehst du mich und meinen alten herrn auf dem live-album, das im pratteler z7 augenommen wurde ;-) zweitens: casey ist auch gründer eines biotechnologie start ups. das ist aktuell sein focus: seine tochter hat einen seltenen gen-defekt und mit alpharose therapeutics entwickelt er skalierbare modelle für sehr seltene krankheiten, definiert sowohl den weg von diagnose zu behandlung als auch die emotionalen und ethischen verflochtenheiten von innovationen in diesem bereich. mehr darüber hören oder lesen. für casey ist das entwickeln neuer medikamente vergleichbar mit dem schreiben von liedern: ‘aus dem nichts etwas erschaffen und menschen ermöglichen, etwas zu fühlen, das sie noch nie zuvor empfunden haben.’ auch gibt er zu, dass sich sein beziehung zu ‘drugs’ verbessert hat: ‘früher habe ich viel gefeiert. ich bin vom drogen nehmen, um dem leben zu entfliehen, übergegangen zum herstellen von medikamenten, die leben zu retten.’

the song i’d like to share today is a sibling of yesterday’s. can’t find a way by endochine is related to lover, you should’ve come over by jeff buckley – perhaps also a reaction or response to it: lyrically, compositionally, vocally, in terms of instrumentation and also in terms of the physical sensations, emotions, feelings and associations that the song is capable of provoikint. the album day two, on which can’t find a way can be found, is out of print. and endochine no longer exists as a band. however, there are traces of them on the internet, for example a 20-year-old live video of the song. i became aware of the band, and in particular their casey mcpherson, about 15 years ago because my favourite drummer mike portnoy included them on one of his famous lists: that of his favourite albums of the decade 2001-2010. touched, moved and impressed was i when i first listened to this cd, which was not so easy to get hold of. for many years, i had missed living artists who hit the same places in my system as jeff buckley with his emotional intensity. so the song i've chosen for today really touched my heart, especially because of casey’s vocals. and it has never been featured in any of my public music formats before! let’s take this train now... while i’m on the subject of casey, i have two more important things to mention. first: in 2012, the first of (so far) three flying colours albums was released, with casey on vocals and guitar, mike on drums, neal morse on vocals and keyboards, steve morse on guitar and dave larue on bass. magnificent progressive pop rock. you might see me and my old man on the live dvd, which was recorded at z7 in pratteln ;-) second: casey is also a founder of a biotechnology start-up. that is his current focus: his daughter has a rare genetic defect and with alpharose therapeutics he is developing scalable models for very rare diseases, defining both the path from diagnosis to treatment and the emotional and ethical intertwining of innovations in this field. hear or read more about it. for casey, developing new drugs is comparable to writing songs: ‘creating something out of nothing and making somebody feel something they’ve never felt before.’ he also admits that his relationship with drugs has improved: 'i used to party hard. i went from doing drugs to escape life to making drugs that save lives.’
