XIX. mazzy star: fade into you
manchmal spülen die wellen des algenrhythmus lang vergessenes hab und gut zurück an den strand des lebens – oder in den insta-fluss: die müde libby, die stickt. im januar hat sie das cover und die tracklist eines mixtape gestickt und ‘die standardeinstellung für musiker ist nicht männlich’ heisst. 70 minuten ohne männliche interpreten. 20 songs aus den jahren 1992-1999, die gut gealtert sind – im gegensatz dazu gäbe es eine sehr, sehr lange liste von songs ihrer männlichen zeitgenossen, deren lyrics gar nicht gut gealtert sind. item. focus auf das, was bereits möglich ist ;-) natürlich hab ich mir daraus eine playlist – sie läuft auch jetzt während des tippens – gebaut und bin dieser perle von mazzy star wieder begegnet. mazzy star ist die legendäre alternative rock band, die sich ende der 80er-jahre um den kern hope sandoval und david roback versammelt hat. nur 4 alben mit verheissungsvollen titeln gibts. fade into you ist vom zweiten. dir geht’s wohl wie mir: das lied ist vertraut. verschwommen ist woher du es kennst. aus den 90ern oder weil es als soundtrack in zahlreichen filmen und serien war? vielleicht ist es gleichzeitig eine melancholisch-nostalgische erinnerung an das jugendliche gefühl von nicht-erwideter liebe: ein einsames sterben unendlich unzählbar vieler tode. und eine dicke, knochenwärmende und herzheilende musikalische wolldecke, die sich um einen legt: einkuscheln und aufgehoben und sicher sein. der 6/4-takt erzeugt einen gedämpften, hynotischen rhythmus, bei dem das tamburin präzise wie ein uhrwerk jeden dreier zählt, während kick-drum und snare-drum sich abwechseln, um den beginn jedes dreier-taktes zu markieren. die langsame und sich wiederholenden melodie evoziert ein gefühl tiefer Sehnsuch. die traurigen streicher pendeln hin und her zwsichen zuversicht und verzweiflung. und dann irgendwann taucht aus den tiefen der hypnotischen monotonie ein schwer fassbarer freude auf… ps: es gäbe noch ein zweites, farbiges, weniger mystisches video. falls du den kontrast erleben willst, klicke hier.

sometimes the waves of the algae rhythm wash long-forgotten belongings back to the beach of life – or into the insta stream: oh my golly, libby’s embroidery. in january, she embroidered the cover and track list of a mixtape called ‘the default setting for musicians is not male’. 70 minutes without male performers. 20 songs from the years 1992-1999 that have aged well – in contrast, there would be a very, very long list of songs by her male contemporaries whose lyrics have not aged well at all. well, whatever. focus on what is already possible ;-) of course, i made a playlist from it – it’s playing right now as i type – and came across this gem by mazzy star gain. mazzy star is the legendary alternative rock band that formed in the late 1980s around hope sandoval and david roback. they only have four albums, all of which are promisingly titled. fade into you is from the second one. you probably feel the same way i do: the song is familiar, but it’s blurry where you know it from. from the 90s, or because it was used as the soundtrack in numerous films and tv shows? perhaps it is also a melancholic, nostalgic memory of the youthful feeling of unrequited love: a lonely dying of countless deaths. and a thick, bone-warming and heart-healing musical blanket that wraps itself around you: snuggle up and feel safe and secure. the 6/4 time signature creates a subdued, hypnotic rhythm, with the tambourine counting each triplet as precisely as clockwork, while the kick drum and snare drum alternate to mark the beginning of each triplet. the slow and repetitive melody evokes a feeling of deep longing. the sad strings oscillate between confidence and despair. and then, at some point, an elusive joy emerges from the depths of the hypnotic monotony...
