VII. brad mehldau: sunday [originally recorded by nick drake]
es ist der 2. advent. der 1. von 3 sonntagen auf unserer musikalischen adventskalendereise. für diese zwischenhalte bringe ich allewyl ein stück ohne text mit. es gibt 2 besondere künstler, die ich immer noch am besser abbilden bin in mir: elliot smith und nick drake. beide mag ich und trotzdem kommen sie kaum in meinem musik-zeige-gefässen vor. letzten sonntag hab ich zum ersten mal was von elliot smith übern äther geschickt. nick drake war vor 5 jahren das bislang erste und letzt mal in einer radiosendung zu besuch. das ist mir aufgefallen als ich das aktuelle album vom jazziklavierspieler brad mehldau genauer gehört hab. ride into the sun ist eine sammlung von elliot smith covers und eigenkompositionen, die ihn würdigen und/oder auf auf elliot smiths lieder und werk antworten. als zweitletztes ist da einem stück von nick drake drauf, den brad mehldau live immer wieder interpretiert hat. und dieses sonntägliche instrumental leg ich uns heute ins türchen. im original geht das so. in der neuen version spielt brad klavier, john davis bass, matt chamberlin schlagzeug – so wie auf ganz vielen rock- und popalben auch – alex sopp das flötensolo sowie ein orchester. geniesse den sonntag ,-) dazu zwei mal schönes anerkennen vom werk von nick drake 1 2, den wir nun schon ein halbes jahrhundert vermissen und ein zitat, das ihm zugeschrieben wird:

it is the second sunday in advent. the first of three sundays on our musical advent calendar journey. for these lay-overs, i always bring a piece without lyrics. there are two specific artists which i’m still learning to portray in myself: elliot smith and nick drake. i like both of them, yet they hardly ever feature in my outlets to show music. last sunday, i played something by elliot smith on the air for the very first time. nick drake was featured in a radio programme five years ago for the first and last time to date. i noticed this when i listened more closely to the latest album by jazz pianist brad mehldau. ride into the sun is a collection of elliot smith covers and original compositions that pay tribute to him and/or respond to elliot smith’s songs and work. the penultimate track is a piece by nick drake, an artist that brad mehldau has performed live many times over the yeasrs. and today, we’re putting this sunday instrumental on the porch. the original goes like this. in the new version, brad plays piano, john davis plays bass, matt chamberlin plays drums – as on many rock and pop albums – alex sopp plays the flute solo, and there is an orchestra. enjoy your sunday ;-) here are two beautiful tributes to the work of nick drake 1 2, whom we have now been missing for half a century, and a quote attributed to him:
