VI. sufjan stevens: mystery of love
das lied, das ich deinen ohren heute zeigen möchte, hat meine emotionale landschaft am dienstag, 26. november 2025 um 09:05 bewegt – wie ich mit der shazam-app nachträglich festgstellt hab. damals hab ich mich schon gefreut, dass mir wieder mal was von sufjan stevens begegnet. den kenn ich aus einem youtube-video vom genialen musikerlärer rick beato. vor 2 jahren hat er eine liste gemacht mit den 40 bestklingenden alben aller zeiten. auf platz 29 war sufjan stevens mit dem album illinoise, angespielt hat rick den song jacksonville. und dann hab ich mir natürlich die ganze scheibe angehört, genauso wie alle anderen 39 der liste. zurück zum 26.11. nach dem shazamen, hab ich das lied erstmal wieder vergessen, hatte es ja gespeichert. vorgestern nach der probe für den catalina-gig am 19.12. tauchte die melodie der 2. zeile der 1. strophe the first time that you kissed me wieder in mir auf. ohne worte und ohne, dass ich sie einem song zuordnen konnte. behelfsmässig hab ich die melodie ins handy gesummt. um mir ne voice memo zu machen, damit so ich den song irgendwann wiederfände. gestern hab ich mir die in letzter zeit geshazamten titel wieder angehört und tada! das mysterium der liebe war gelöst. das zeichen, dass der song heute in den adventlichen musikalender gehört, war da. beim recherchieren hab ich herausgefunden, dass dieser und zwei weitere songs von sufjan auf dem soundtrack eines wunderschön-traurigen films sind. call me by your name möcht ich bald sehen. das wär auch was für nen cinema d’anima abend. bist du dabei?
nachtrag: am samstag, 6. dezember gegen halb 11 des vormittags erinnert mich eine oft-leser-und-hörerin des adventlichen musikalenders daran, dass ich den song bereits vorher einmal gehört hab, weil sie in mir letztes jahr in der version der melancholisch-eigenwilligen soap&skin aus österreich gezeigt hat. danke fürs einsammeln dieser erinnerung.

the song i want to share with you today moved me emotionally on tuesday, november 26 2025 at 9:05 a.m. – as i later discovered using the shazam app. at the time, i was already delighted to have come across something by sufjan stevens again. i know him from a youtube video by the brilliant music explainer rick beato. two years ago, he made a list of the top 40 greatest sounding albums of all time. sufjan stevens was number 29 with the album illinoise, and rick partially played the song jacksonville. and then, of course, i listened to the whole album, as well as all the other 39 on that list. back to november 26. after shazaming it, i forgot about the song again, as i had saved it. the day before yesterday, after rehearsal for the catalina show on december 19, the melody of the second line of the first verse, the first time that you kissed me, popped back into my head. without words and without being able to place it in a song. as a makeshift solution, i hummed the melody into my mobile phone to make a voice memo so that i could find the song again sometime. yesterday, i listened to the songs i had shazamed recently and ta-da! the mystery of love was solved. the sign that the song belongs in the musical advent calendar today was there. While researching, i learnt that this and two other songs by sufjan are on the soundtrack of a brutifully sad film. i want to see call me by your name soon. it would also be perfect for another cinema d'anima evening. are you in?
addendum: on Saturday, December 6, around half past ten in the morning, a frequent reader and listener of the musical advent calendar reminded me that i had already heard the song before, because she showed me last year's version by the melancholic and idiosyncratic soap&skin from austria. thank you for bringing back this memory.
